Jesse "Monkey Joe" Coleman は1906 年 1 月26日に父 Thomas Coleman と母 Mary Lee (Marie) Jackson Coleman の間に Tennessee 州 Memphis で生まれているようですが、資料によってはその本名を Jesse Lee Coleman としているものがあります。他に兄弟姉妹がいたのかどうかについては確認されていません。ただし、彼が育ったのは Mississippi 州の Jackson であり、ピアニストの Coot Davis は異父弟あるいは異母弟だった、という記載も存在しています。
彼はピアノだけではなく、トランペット、トロンボーン、ドラム、さらにジョークを語りタップ・ダンスまでこなしていたそうですから、その踊るさまからモンキーの異名が与えられたのかも？（ってのは勝手な妄想なので、ほかのとこで言いふらさないようにね）また一説では、Jack Newman や George Jefferson* という偽名（？）も使っていたようです。

で、そのサポート・ミュージシャンを見るとピアノに George Jefferson、Willie Bee James（ 歌ったりもするギタリスト。1935 年には Decca に二曲を吹き込んでいますが、それは unissued のまま。むしろブルーバードへのいろんなブルースマンのバッキング・ギタリストとして知られている。生没年・出生地ともに不明）のギター、 ベースが（たぶん）Ransom Knowling、そして二曲めの Everybody Do The Shag ではプラス氏名不詳のクラリネット⋯
その名義では、たった二曲しかリリースされてないナゾのブルースマン（？）George Jefferson ゆうのは、ホントは Monkey Joe つまり Jesse "Monkey Joe" Coleman の「ワケあって⋯の偽名」であろう！ゆうことを示唆するサイトもありますが、いずれも「⋯と言ってるヒトいるよ」程度の口伝であって決定的な確証はありません。

*− Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order: Volume 1 ( 1935-1939 ) での曲名表示ではライナーノーツ、センターレーベルのどちらでも Patunia となっていますが、通常ブルース界で使われる単語としては（特にその前に Sweet がつくケースでは）和名ツクバネアサガオの熱帯アメリカ産ナス科の鑑賞用の花 Petunia （ペチュニア）が採用です。ただし、最近の（そう！1935 年には存在しなかった！）スラングでは「大胆さと型破りな精神が体現され、社会規範や期待に対する反抗的な態度を表し、本当の自分を受け入れること、束縛から解放され、自分の個性を称賛するよう促す、伝統的な境界を超え、文脈や個人的な解釈に基づいて適応し、進化する」とゆう意味合いのスラングとなっているようです。
まあ、ゼッタイそうだ！とは言い切れませんが「単なるスペリング・ミス」ではないかと⋯

その後、シカゴの Lester Melrose の手配で様々なブルースマンのバッキングに参加し始めたようですが、その全貌までは不明です。

10inch SP 以外に Monkey Joe & Roosevelt Scott, Document DOCD-5413 に収録されています。
そのアルバムには Roosevelt Scott 名義の 12 曲もピアノは Jesse Coleman、つまり Monkey Joe。

それ以降もシカゴで時々演奏などもしていた、という風聞はあるようですが、確実な資料は存在しないようです。
一説では 1967 1116日、Chicago の Cook County Hospital で死亡し、Homewood の Washington Cemetery に埋葬されているようです。
Find A Grave にアップされている墓碑銘の画像では 1906 - 1967 となっております。

Apparently the blues pianist and singer. Some information may be uncertain and/or contradictory.

Born in 26 January 1906 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, son of Thomas Coleman and Mary Lee (Marie) Jackson Coleman. By 1930 he was in Chicago at age 24, living with his parents (no siblings there) in an apartment at 4714 S. Evans Avenue.

"Blues A Regional Experience" reports (page 241): "Monkey Joe (Jesse L. Coleman) (v/p) (Memphis, January 26, 1906 -- Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, November 16, 1967) [1215] Son of Thomas Coleman and Mary Lee (Marie) Jackson. Burial at Washington Cemetery, Homewood." Supported by 1930 census, SSDI, Cook County death certificate and other records.

Following is reported, unproven: Raised in Jackson, Mississippi, half brother of pianist Coot Davis. Coleman also played trumpet, trombone, and drums, cracked jokes and tap-danced, according to Johnnie Temple. A brief biography (Eder) claims (uncited) Monkey Joe was still playing clubs into the 1970's.
